QUID EST FEMINA?
David Marcus dives into the big debate du jour by asking a question with no answer: What, legally, is a transgender woman?
Government set-asides for women, bathroom etiquette and women’s colleges were all designed for a biology-based binary system. If the law is going to mandate trans acceptance in intimate settings, the law also needs to define what trans actually means:
“Thus far, that definition seems to be ‘people are transgender if they say they are.’ This is not good enough.”
PRIESTS IN THE SLAVE TRADE
Facing financial stress in the 1830s, the Jesuits of Georgetown University sold their slaves down the river.
The New York Times reported on a Georgetown alumnus’ quest to track down the descendants of those slaves and help make them whole. The story also plumbed the moral mess facing the 19th-century priests, who debated selling black Catholic families to plantation owners who would almost certainly work them brutally and keep them from churches. As Rev. Jan Roothaan wrote at the time:
“It would be better to suffer financial disaster than suffer the loss of our souls with the sale of the slaves.”

GOOD REPORTING ISN’T DEAD
The outstanding newshounds include:
Alissa Rubin, a New York Times reporter who charges straight into war zones and relays her stories despite breaking bones in a deadly helicopter crash, awarded for her coverage of women’s struggles in Afghanistan.
T. Christian Miller (ProPublica) and Ken Armstrong (The Marshall Project), rival reporters who teamed up to tell the story of a methodical rapist and the police who might have caught him earlier if only they’d believed his teenage victi.
