When my second son was born, I and a good friend ran interference with the medical staff, and mother & child were allowed to bond for an hour before we let them take him (dozing, belly full of milk) for weighing and eye drops. The pediatrician tried to alarm us by saying his Apgar score was low- yes because he was quietly nursing in total eye contact with his parents. Too many medical professionals try to make it a production line.
