In the Catholic tradition, I find great comfort in the Martyrologium said daily at Prime in the Divine Office. The trials faced with bravery and faith by the early church exemplify Christian witness in spite of overwhelming and often fatal adversity. Obviously, we are not all called to die as martyrs (thank God), but the inspiration provided by the Fr. Hamels and the mere notion that the ‘blood of the Martyrs is the seed of the Church’ should encourage us to see these trials as opportunities rather than crosses. Christianity has seen a far more hopeless time and it nonetheless has endured.
